Northfield, Mankato theater fests seek very short scripts

Here’s something that reflects the meaning of that song, "What I Did for Love," from the show-biz musical "A Chorus Line."

Two theater groups — one in Northfield, the other in Mankato — are soliciting short scripts for festivals that take place this spring and next fall. And by short, they mean short: The Mankato festival limits performance time to 15 minutes, while each play has to come in at 10 minutes or less for the festival in Northfield.

If your play is accepted, you have to stage your play yourself, recruit your own actors, and provide your own costumes and props. Theater space and rudimentary lighting are provided.

The reward? Love and glory, for the most part. The Mankato festival, organized by playwright Greg Abbott, managed to land a grant from the Prairie Lakes Arts Council that provides $100 for each script.

"It’s our first stab at this, but I wanted some recognition for the playwrights," Abbott said.

The Northfield Arts Guild, which has sponsored its "Very Short Play Festival" for the past three years, doesn’t offer any cash incentive. But that hasn’t stopped the intake of scripts.

Both festivals have two categories for scripts — an adult series and a family-friendly series. Performances will be in May for the Northfield Festival and September for the Mankato effort, called the Minnesota Shorts Festival of Plays.

If you’ve got a burning idea for a short play, start typing now. The deadline for scripts for the Northfield festival is March 15. The Mankato festival is accepting scripts through the end of March.
