Tonight only: a ticket offer for 'The Miracle Worker'

If you feel like going out on a warm February night — at least, that’s today’s weather prediction — there’s a deal available at History Theatre in St. Paul, where the stage has been turned over to Torch Theater’s signature production of "The Miracle Worker."

Tonight’s (Feb. 6) performance is a two-for-one deal, if you mention a code — MW-0206 — when you call the theater’s box office (651-292-4323). Regular tickets cost $22 to $25. Students are charged $10. The second ticket is free for tonight’s show only.

It’s no secret that a lot of theaters are offering deals to get seats filled, or canceling performances outright for lack of sales — as the Minnesota Orchestra did this week for a Feb. 28 concert by New Orleans jazz pianists.

In the case of "The Miracle Worker," the need to churn the sea for audiences is unfortunate. The show has been done twice before by Torch Theater — it was the play that launched the theater back in 2005, in fact. It’s rare to see a professional production of William Gibson’s sturdy, well-known play about Helen Keller, and this one is especially strong. (You can read my review here.)

And besides, the weather is warm tonight in Tuscumbia, Ala., the home of Helen, her family and, of course, Teacher.
