New foods at the State Fair: Deep-fried spiral potato on a stick, dipped in chocolate, anyone?

With just over three weeks remaining until the State Fair opens, it's time to look at the new food items to be offered at stands and restaurants throughout the fairgrounds.

And in some cases, that's all we'll do. Look.

Last year, the Tornado Potato was new: an entire potato, cut into a spiral, flash fried and put on a stick. This year they're dipping it in chocolate. Really. Sonny's Spiral Spud, inside the Food Building.

The Fudge Puppy has become a fair favorite. It's a rolled Belgian waffle on a stick, baked, dipped in chocolate, and topped with whipped cream and sprinkles, strawberries, or M&Ms. This year, they're adding Caramel Apple and Turtle options. Fudge Puppies, outside west wall of the Food Building.

Other options:

Cheese Pizza topped with corn dogs sliced the long way. Pizza Shoppe, inside the Food Building.

Cincinnati Chili — spaghetti noodles with chili and topped with shredded cheddar, beans and diced onions. Sabino's, inside the Warner Coliseum.

St. Paul's O'Gara's Bar and Grill expands its fair offerings with a Danny Boy Burger — burger made with corned beef and covered with kraut, Swiss cheese and Thousand Island dressing — and an Irish Breakfast (scrambled eggs smothered in Irish Stew served in a bread bowl). O'Gara's, now on the corner of Dan Patch Avenue and Cosgrove Street.

Deep-fried bacon cheddar mashed potatoes on-a-stick. Potato Man and Sweetie, on Liggett Street, south of Carnes Avenue.

Deep-fried bologna on-a-stick. Netterfield's Food Court, on Cooper Street, north of Dan Patch Avenue.

Deep-fried breakfast wrap — scrambled eggs and bacon in a soft shell wrap, deep-fried and smothered in cheese sauce. Axel's, outside on the southeast corner of the Food Building.

Deep-fried shortcake — shortcake batter, deep-fried and covered with strawberries and ice cream. Granny's Cheesecake & More, on Dan Patch Avenue at Underwood Street.

Fresh fruit salsa and chips. Fried Fruit, in Carousel Park on the east side of the Grandstand Ramp.

Fried pig ears — thinly sliced pigs' ears dusted in seasoned flour, fried until crispy and served with lime chipotle glaze. Famous Dave's, on the corner of Dan Patch Avenue and Liggett Street.

Ghost Wings — chicken wings covered in a habanero pepper sauce. Wings and Things, inside the Warner Coliseum.

Grilled marshmallow, chocolate and banana sandwich. Moe & Joe's, on Judson Avenue by the CHS Miracle of Birth Center.

Hearing about the Fair's food selections brought to mind a favorite mystery writer, Donald Westlake. Noted for his humor and eccentric characters (but unfortunately now deceased)Westlake once set a novel in the country-music mecca of Branson, Missouri. One character was a singer whose audiences LOVED to sing along when he came to the final line of each verse: "If it ain't fried, it ain't food."

He might have been singing about the Fair and its many varieties of Heart Attack on a Stick.
