Intermedia Arts troubles: Is art the next thing to go?

By Amy Goetzman | Published Tue, Dec 16 2008 10:30 am

Poets and writers weren’t exactly partying with the mortgage brokers in the boom years, but it looks like the poet’s lonely garret could get even lonelier. This week, Intermedia Arts, the innovative and inclusive Minneapolis arts organization, announced that it’s in dire financial straights. Here's the full announcement on the issues.

Intermedia Arts has played a vital role in the Twin Cities’ literary community for nearly four decades, supporting and nurturing diverse generations of writers, poets and playwrights, as well as visual and performing artists. Affordable classes, the outstanding Carol Connolly reading series, and an amazing library of Minnesota poetry made this a lively, lowbrow alternative to the Loft. The writing’s not on the wall yet; this Friday, Intermedia Arts is hosting a Community Townhall to discuss options and potential solutions to what it’s calling a "crisis," but not a closure.

Intermedia Arts Community Townhall, 5:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 19. 2822 Lyndale Ave. S., Minneapolis.
