An area writer/performer’s plan to mix cooking and performing art has netted him a major national arts grant. Playwright Robert Farid Karimi has received a $10,000 grant from Creative Capital to develop an interactive work titled “The Cooking Show con Karimi y Comrades: Deabetes of Democracy.”
Karimi, whose work includes “self (the remix)” and “Shaving Time,” has crafted past “episodes” of his interactive cooking show/theatrical performance. In this case, he plans to base the work on a cooking show, then explore issues of diabetes in immigrant communities. In all, he’ll hold residencies in six U.S. communities, which will include performances and cooking and storytelling workshops.
Over the past decade, nonprofit Creative Capital has committed more than $14 million to hundreds of projects and artists throughout the United States. Karimi is eligible for additional money from the program, along with support to develop other areas of the profession, including fundraising and marketing.
Karimi is the fourth area artist in the past decade to win a Creative Capital grant. He follows Gugun Kayiim (2006 performing arts), Paul Shambroom (2001 visual arts) and David Hancock (2000 performing arts).
