The artists responsible for public art at the coming University Avenue light rail stations are looking for guidance and ideas.
Or in the words of those who organize these things, they're holding “visioning sessions.”
Five artists, all with experience in public art, have been selected for the stations, each with responsibility for three of the 15 stations along the route, which connects downtown Minneapolis and downtown St. Paul, mostly along University Avenue.
At these “visioning sessions,” community members are “invited to share ideas on local history and culture around each station with the assigned artist.”
The Dale Street station is in St. Paul's Frogtown neighborhood; I imagine that could provide some grist for historical and cultural allusions.
The next sessions in the ongoing series are today:
4 p.m. at St. Joseph's Hospital in downtown St. Paul, to consider the 10th Street and the Capitol entrance stations, with artist Janet Lofquist of Minneapolis. Use the new entrance to enter the hospital.
6 p.m., at the Hamline Midway Library, 1558 West Minnehaha Ave., St., to consider the
Snelling Avenue Station, with artist Roberto Delgado of Los Angeles.
Some sessions have been held already, but others coming up are (in geographic order, west to east, along the route):
West Bank Station: March 23, 6:30 p.m., Brian Coyle Center, 420 15th Ave S., Minneapolis. Artist Nancy Blum of New York.
East Bank Station: March 24, 2:30 p.m., 420 Washington Ave. SE, Room 2-122, Minneapolis. Artist Nancy Blum of New York.
29th Avenue Station: March 19, 7 p.m., Textile Center, 3000 University Ave. SE, Minneapolis. Artist Janet Lofquist of Minneapolis.
Westgate Station: March 26, 6 p.m., Court International Building, North Atrium, 2550 University Ave., St. Paul. Artist Myklebust + Sears Studio of Stockholm, Wis.
Fairview Avenue Station: March 24, 6 p.m., Goodwill Easter Seals, 553 Fairview Ave. N, St. Paul. Artist Nancy Blum of New York.
Dale Street Station: March 25, 6 p.m., Model Cities Brownstone, 849 University Ave., St. Paul. Artist Seitu Jones of St. Paul.
Union Depot Station: March 24, 6 p.m., Black Dog Restaurant, 308 Prince St., St. Paul. Artist Myklebust + Sears Studio of Stockholm, Wis.
Anyone who can't attend the meetings can contact the Central Corridor LRT’s community outreach staff or call 651-602-1645. And there's lots more information on Central Corridor, including the art component, here.
