SpotLight honors stars of real high-school musicals

High-school students from around the metro area will showcase their musical-theater talents this weekend at the annual SpotLight Awards. The annual showcase, which features performances by students from dozens of regional high schools, will be held Sunday evening at the Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis.
The annual school-year program, sponsored by the Hennepin Theatre Trust, has the musicals from each participating school judged by a group of expert volunteers. The awards are not competitive, allowing for many talented performers to receive much-deserved kudos.
Honored shows for the 2008-2009 year run the gamut, from classics like "Fiddler on the Roof" and "The Music Man" to more recent and much edgier fair like "Sweeney Todd," "Urinetown" and "Rent."
On Saturday, a day of workshops for the students from the 31 schools will be held.
The Sunday evening program starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are $12. For information and a full list of honored shows, visit online.
