Sheila Smith, executive director of Minnesota Citizens for the Arts, is being honored today at the Americans for the Arts convention in Seattle.
Smith is the third recipient of the Alene Valkanas State Arts Advocacy Award, first presented in 2006 to Valkanas, a now-retired executive director of the Illinois Arts Alliance. The award honors those who have "dramatically affected the political landscape through arts advocacy efforts at the state level," according to a statement from Americans for the Arts.
"Sheila has been a tremendous leader and passionate advocate for the arts and arts education in Minnesota," said Robert L. Lynch, president and CEO for Americans for the Arts. "Her unwavering commitment to local, state, and national support for the arts deserves this recognition.”
Lynch cited Smith’s relentless work on last year’s passage of the Clean Water, Land and Legacy Amendment, which will dedicate a portion of a state sales-tax increase to the arts for the next 25 years.
The advocacy award is presented by the State Arts Action Network of Americans for the Arts.
