Kushner Celebration exceeded goals, Guthrie says

By David Hawley | Published Wed, Jul 1 2009 10:18 am

The Guthrie Theater is claiming success for its "Kushner Celebration," which wrapped up at the end of June after more than two months of performances and events.

The theater said 90,000 people attended events during the celebration, including productions on the theater’s three stages, plus classes, seminars, workshops and other activities. The three plays staged by the Guthrie -- "Caroline, or Change," "Tiny Kushner" and "The Intelligent Homosexual’s Guide to Capitalism and Socialism with a Key to the Scriptures" -- all exceeded their box-office goals, the theater said.

When asked if the productions exceeded goals in both attendance and income, Guthrie spokeswoman Melodie Bahan answered, "Both." But she declined to give financial details and said a calculation of attendance in terms of percentages of seating capacity will be available in a few days.

In an interview prior to the start of the celebration, Artistic Director Joe Dowling said offering large events focusing on a particular artist, subject or theme was one of the goals envisioned when the Guthrie opened its three-theater complex.

"The success of this venture reaffirms that goal," Bahan said Tuesday.

The centerpiece of the celebration was the world premiere of "Intelligent Homosexual’s Guide ...," which received mixed reviews. Nonetheless, the play is being readied for a Broadway production next year. Kushner acknowledged during a public talk last month that he hadn’t yet "solved the play," and it’s expected that major changes will be made before the New York production.

Of the other productions, "Caroline, or Change," a musical, was widely regarded as one of the strongest local productions in years. "Tiny Kushner," which was presented in the small Dowling studio, was a compilation of some of Kushner’s short one-acts.
