A theater with a view: Couple’s video captures Guthrie district and wedding giveaway

By Casey Selix | Published Tue, Jul 14 2009 4:14 pm

If you can get beyond the marketing aspect of the Guthrie Theater’s $60,000 wedding giveaway, you’re in for a treat while watching the winning couple’s video entry.

In about five minutes, Gretchen Bierbaum and Jeremiah Albrecht manage to show several spectacular views from the Guthrie’s grounds in Minneapolis during their pitch to be married on the Wurtele Thrust Stage.

The pitch isn’t gushy or cutesy, thank heavens. It’s amusing and understated. For example, Bierbaum confides that planning a wedding “terrifies” her, and Albrecht quips, “Her mom won’t call me the son-out-law anymore.” Clever.

When I’ve entertained out-of-town guests in recent years, I’ve made sure to include the breathtaking view of the Mississippi River and the cityscape from the balcony of the Guthrie’s cantilever. Albrecht has a hilarious scene with the cantilever, which I won’t spoil, but you’ll probably chuckle when you see it. Plus, there are views in and around the Guthrie that I hadn’t fully appreciated until now.

The couple will be married Aug. 16. What will their $60,000 wedding include? Check out the loot here.
