Here are previews of several dance events:

"Pipa," by Tamara Ober: A standout performer with Zenon Dance Company and a performer/choreographer with last year’s Fringe gem, "The Gypsy and the General," Ober is a talent to watch. This new solo show about a fantastical French girl, a mix of dance, theater and video, has already been lauded in Canada.

An example: "A versatile and creative artist in whom the gesture suggests a shared imagination and movement redefines the dimensions of an extraordinary fantasy world." -- Voir, Montréal.

"Pipa," Thursday, July 30, 8:30 p.m.; Saturday, Aug. 1, 5:30 p.m.; Monday, Aug. 3, 10 p.m.; Friday, Aug. 7, 8:30 p.m.; Sunday, Aug. 9, 2:30 p.m.; Rarig Center: Xperimental Theater, University of Minnesota, 330 21st Ave. S. Minneapolis.

"Re:Trace" (Ready at Will Collective):This dance collective (Erin Drummond, Denise Gagner, Laura Grant, Mandy Herrick, Mary Clare Lindsley, Taja Will) focuses its work primarily on exploring site specificity in buildings around town. This new piece takes place in the nooks, crannies, stairwells and bathrooms of the historic building that houses such downtown mainstays as House of Balls and Moose & Sadie’s. In a prior iteration, the building was part of the Minneapolis streetcar system and still has the hooks, knobs and odd spaces to prove it. Wear comfortable shoes, as the audience follows the performers through the building.

"Stray Pieces" (Kari Jensen, Moving Arts Ensemble): This Burnsville-based company performs nine works choreographed by Jensen that demonstrate her facility at a variety of choreographic styles. While grounded in the technique and formalism of classical ballet, the work ventures into such genres as tango, hip-hop and tap.

"The Three Bonnies" (DA Dance): St. Paul choreographer Denise Armstead blends her two great loves, dance and horses, in this work set to music by Bonnie Raitt. Dancers Devin Carey, Kelly Radermacher, Cade Holmseth, Sharon Picasso and Gerry Girouard (along with Armstead, a former Zenon Dance Company member) gallop through the emotional ups and downs of relationships in a work by turns moving and humorous.

"Thrower of Light" (Cathy Wright): Several years ago, during the Momentum series, Wright seemingly came out of nowhere with a dark, almost cabalistic piece that was both frightening and riveting. I’ll watch anything she does, just to see what she’s up to.

"You/Provoke/Me" (Same Planet Different World Dance Theatre): This modern-dance company from Chicago presents two works by artistic director Joanna Rosenthal, one that explores the sensuality of touch and another that delves into the sexuality of women. Another work, set to music by The Beatles, investigates the physicality of relationships. The show also includes a quartet inspired by oceans, and a duet about languishing love.

"Mansion of Dust" (Sarah Stevenson Scrimshaw): Never been a huge fan, but Stevenson Scrimshaw has lovely, long lines as a dancer, and aren’t the Scrimshaws a Fringe institution? Joined by husband Joseph Scrimshaw, Stevenson Scrimshaw features dance, dialogue and physical comedy in a discovery-themed work.
