Pipa is afflicted with some sort of blindness, which may be more psychological than physiological. She bumps into things and tends to lose her way, but only because she’s reveling in an internal world -- the nerves, sensations and feelings that lie beneath her skin and dwell within her soul -- that’s far more interesting than the everyday external world. Except when she encounters a wirewalker or a faith healer or a butterfly.

Then the outside world ignites her internal life, which Ober physicalizes in an exuberant choreography of muscular investigation, delicate gesture and topsy-turvy movement. And her feet, my goodness, are more expensive than most dancers’ hands.

In Pipa’s world, Ober’s props -- a bench, a stool, a microphone -- are transformed into furniture, ladders and rooftops, which she navigates with an internal logic that’s transportive. When, in the video conclusion, Pipa becomes the figure of her own imagination and of ours, it’s quite simply magic.
