Jawaahir Dance celebrates 20 years with evening of Arabic dance, live music

For 20 years, Cassandra Shore has been animating the traditions of Arabic dance and music — even, at times, extending them with contemporary flair. This weekend and next, she and her company, Jawaahir Dance Company, celebrate their accomplishments with yet more of the same: a vibrant evening of dance and live music they’re calling "Raqs Nouveau — Turath wa Jadid."
Color, movement, sound and enthusiasm infuse these shows, which include traditional pieces and Shore’s singular take on new ways of absorbing one of the world’s most complex cultures. For this 20th anniversary concert, live music will be performed by Georges Lamman and Ensemble, which has performed with the dance troupe for the past decade. The program includes other guest artists from the Twin Cities Arabic music scene.
