If you work in downtown Minneapolis or somewhere nearby, here’s a pleasant way to spend your lunch hour on Tuesday:

Tina Fabrique, who is turning in a much-admired tribute to Ella Fitzgerald at the Guthrie Theater this summer, will appear with two other members of the cast of "Ella" in a free performance at noon in the IDS Center’s Crystal Court.

She’ll be performing for an hour with pianist George Caldwell and bass player Clifton Kellem. Some Fitzgerald standards from the show will be on the menu along with some personal favorites of the performers.

Fabrique has been portraying Fitzgerald fairly regularly since 2005, when a concert version of "Ella" was first staged at Theater Works in Hartford, Conn. The show, which now includes a book written by local playwright Jeff Hatcher, is scheduled to run at the Guthrie through Sept. 6.

The critical reaction to the show when it opened at the Guthrie last month fell basically into two camps: Not enough book or too much book. But I didn’t read a single quibble with the 24 songs or the way Fabrique & Co. conveyed them.

So if you have time for Tuesday’s freebee, it will be worth it.
