The Wisconsin State Fair ended Sunday with attendance down a bit because of lousy weather and, I suppose, the economy, so it's time to look forward to the Minnesota State Fair, which runs Aug. 27 to Sept. 7.

The Wisconsin folks were touting their new foods -- which did not include quarterback on a stick, but did include chicken wings on a stick and cherry pie on a stick -- so let's look at what's new in food at our fair.

The Spam Burger booth people have a new Breakfast Spam Sandwich, (Spam, egg and cheese) and an Open-faced Grilled Spam Sandwich to their menu. Spam is big in a recession, they say.

Famous Dave's at the fair always comes up with new treats, and most years I'll give them a try, but this year's "Peach-Glazed Pig Cheeks" will likely go untested by the MinnPost State Fair Bureau.

Pot Roast Sundae is a bit of a misnomer: It's supposed to look like a sundae, but is a scoop of mashed potatoes covered with roast beef, gravy, corn and a cherry tomato. It's at Main Street Butcher Block, at Dan Patch Av. and Liggett St.

Seems like someone would have come up with Swedish Meatballs and Gravy as a fair food long ago. Maybe they did and gave up on it, because it's listed as a new food, at Lynn's Lefse in the Food Building.

Deep-Fried Norwegian Banana Split is going for the ethnic vote: banana rolled in lefse, deep fried and topped with ice cream and toppings. At Ole and Lena's, Liggett St. and Carnes Av.

And Giggle's Campfire Grill expands its fish menu with Sunfish. On Cooper St. and Lee Av.
