Minneapolis filmmaker Bob Hammel has spent the last two years following six recipients of the McKnight Fellowship in Dance. Through the fellowship, dancers commission a choreographer to create a solo for them. And Hammel has documented this creative process in his new documentary film “SOLO: 1 X 2.”

The film will be screened Friday and Saturday night, at the Southern Theater, prior to its release. For a preview go here. 

A testament to the rigorous collaborative process that goes into choreographing a dance solo, the film also hints at the range of dance styles currently flourishing in the Twin Cities. There are ballet and modern-dance solos, of course. But also a jazz piece for Karla Grotting; a flamenco piece for Colette Illarde; and a Bharatanatyam solo for Aparna Ramaswamy.

Also appearing in the documentary are such dance luminaries as choreographers Douglas Dunn, Susan Marshall, Katsura Kan, Elizabeth Streb and Donna Uchizono. Legendary dance critic Deborah Jowitt also provides insightful commentary.
