If at all possible, I’m going to attempt to slip “Sonatas, Interludes, and Accumulations” into an already hectic weekend. Because any chance to hear John Cage’s music performed live -- while such stellar Twin Cities dancers as Krista Langberg, Eric Boone, Wynn Fricke and Christopher Watson perform -- is truly an event not to be missed. Moreover, it’s free.

Macalester Theatre & Dance and Music Departments are collaborating on this significant choreographed performance. Pianist Mark Mazullo plays Cage’s landmark 1948 piece, “Sonatas and Interludes for Prepared Piano” (which means the pitches, timbres, and dynamic responses of individual notes have been altered by placing bolts, screws, mutes, rubber erasers and other objects at particular points on the strings).

Choreographer Becky Heist made the movement, which will also be performed by Macalester dance students. Actor David Cady will read quotes from writings by Cage writings in “Silence: Lectures and Writing.”
