Mixed Blood opens season with area premiere of prize-winner 'Ruined'

Lynn Nottage’s Pulitzer-Prize winning drama “Ruined” opens the 34th Mixed Blood Theater season tonight.
Nottage’s work explores the trials of life in the mining region of the Congo. It follows Mama Nadi, a businesswoman who offers a retreat from the war-torn land for government soldiers, rebel forces and miners alike.
Questions of abuse, exploitation and rape surround Nadi in this much-honored new work.
The 2009 Pulitzer was only one of the accolades won by the play, which also notched an Obie Award for best new American play and the 2009 Lucille Lortel and Drama Desk Awards for outstanding play. The show ran in Chicago and had an extended run off-Broadway before closing in early September. The Mixed Blood run is the first for the play since it closed in New York.
The Mixed Blood production is directed by Aditi Kapil and features the talents of 11 performers, including Regina Marie Williams, Bruce A. Young, Irungu Mutu, Aimee Bryant, Celeste Jones and Gavin Lawrence.
“Ruined” runs through Nov. 22 at the Mixed Blood Theatre, 1501 S. Fourth S., Minneapolis. Tickets are $14 to $28. For information and tickets, call (612) 338-6131 or visit online.
