Hip-hop culture takes the stage at Children’s Theatre

By Ed Huyck | Published Fri, Oct 16 2009 1:01 pm

An unusual trip into hip-hop culture will be offered at the Children’s Theatre Company starting this weekend.

The Mayhem Poets bring a mix of hip-hop, spoken word, audience participation and improvisational comedy for a three-week run at the theater.

The work was originally created at Rutgers University in New Jersey by Kyle Sutton, Scott Raven and Mason Granger as an “open-mic” night performance. Mixing their theater training with the raw hip-hop world, the players have earned accolades around the country and, in 2006, won a $100,000 grant and first prize in the Microsoft Idea Wins Challenge. They have also collaborated with rap legend KRS One and have issued a disc, “Reverse Birth.”

The Mayhem Poets perform through Nov. 1 on the Cargill Stage at the Children’s Theatre Company, 2400 Third Ave. S., Minneapolis. Tickets are $14 to $29, and the show is recommended for age 11 and up. For information and tickets, call 612.874.0400 or visit online
