    'Competing' chamber program see-worthy, too

By David Hawley | Published Fri, Oct 23 2009 10:59 am

I’ve already recommended the season-opening concert by the venerable Musical Offering that takes place Sunday at Hamline University - but here I am, recommending a competing chamber-music concert at the other end of the metro area.

The Chamber Music Society of Minnesota opens its season Sunday at 4 p.m. with a program designed for young audiences. Appropriately, it’s being performed at South View Middle School in Edina.

The program includes Saint-Saens’ popular “Carnival of Animals” with Penumbra Theatre founder Lou Bellamy providing the narration. Also on the program is the U.S. premiere of “An Autumn Evening,” by British composer Allan Bullard. The soloist is soprano Maria Jette. Rounding out the concert is Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet.

No admission is being charged for children 12 and younger. Tickets for adults are $25. It’s a little late to reserve tickets by email (admin@chambermusicsociety.org), but you can call for them at 651-450-0527.

The Musical Offering’s concert is at 3 p.m. in Sundin Hall at Hamline University, St. Paul. You can’t attend both, unfortunately.
