Aditi Kapil, a resident artist at Mixed Blood Theatre who directed its current production of “Ruined,” won the Stavis Playwrighting Award last weekend at the National Theatre Conference in New York.

Kapil received the award for her play, “Love Person.” At the same event, playwright Tony Kushner received the organization’s Outstanding Person of the Year award and the long-lived Living Theatre of New York, now in its 60^th year, was named Outstanding Theatre.

Founded in 1925, the National Theatre Conference is a cooperative association of theater leaders with 120 members who can join only by invitation. It describes itself as a “think tank” and meets annually to honor significant work. The Stavis Award, which includes a $1,000 prize, is given annually to an outstanding emerging playwright.

Kapil is the 22^nd writer to receive the award since it was created in 1988. Here’s a list of other honorees.

Kapil, who lives in Minneapolis and attended Macalester College, was nominated for the 2009 Pulitzer Prize for “Love Person,” though the award went to “Ruined.” Her staging of “Ruined” at Mixed Blood is the second the play has received since winning the Pulitzer.
