Last week, one of my students (I’ve been teaching dance criticism at the U of M this semester) asked me whom I consider the best choreographers in the Twin Cities. Without hesitation I answered, Uri Sands. Of course, I had to immediately qualify my response.

I don’t like everything Sands choreographs for his company, TU Dance, which he founded with his partner,Toni Pierce-Sands. But I consider some of his pieces masterworks of ingenuity, intelligence and emotional resonance (see here.)

Which is why I look forward to every one of TU Dance’s concerts. The one this weekend includes two new works by Sands. One is a duet with fellow dancer Marciano Silva dos Santos; the chance to see those two men dance together — powerhouses of completely different body types — is not to be missed. The other is a new installment in his “Sense(ability)” series of sketches.

Also on the program is the lovely “Tones of Adney,” a company and critical favorite from TU Dance’s quickly growing repertory. The company is also presenting Danial Shapiro and Joanie Smith’s “Dance With Army Blankets,” a piece last staged by the Alvin Ailey Repertory Ensemble in 1992 in New York. (Sands and Piece-Sands are alumni of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.)

This concert promises to be one to truly sink into, body and soul.
