A guide to a few of this weekend's under-the-radar art sales

By Susannah Schouweiler | Published Fri, Dec 4 2009 3:39 pm

In addition to No Coast Craft-O-Rama, there are a bevy of art sales going on this weekend, all aiming to help you spend your holiday gift money. Below are a few worthwhile events coming up in the next few days that may have passed under your radar.

CVA Holiday Art Sale and Auction
College of Visual Arts, St. Paul, today through Sunday
    What to look for:
Artwork by up-and-comers for a steal

Browse through original art made by CVA students, alumni, and faculty - prints, photographs, paintings, sculpture, mixed media -- in the college's recently expanded annual holiday sale. As with most student sales, there's a ticketed preview event tonight that is worth your while if you want access to the best selection of work. In addition to the art sale, visitors may bid on a select group of prints and artwork from the CVA Art Archives in a silent auction; proceeds from the auction will go toward the college's scholarship funds.

    MNfashion's pop-up Holiday Boutique
Gaviidae Common (skyway level), Minneapolis, open through Dec. 31

What to look for: Fresh fashion and stylishly quirky accessories by local artists and designers

More than 30 local designers and artisans have come together to participate in MNfashion's second annual pop-up boutique in the swanky retail center, Gaviidae Common. Of particular note: one-of-a-kind Ruby 3 hats by MNfashion founder Anna Lee; beautiful clutches by AO3 Designs.

    Studiopolis $99 and Under Sale
Studiopolis (Northrup King Building #423), Minneapolis, today and Saturday

What to look for: Bargains on original visual art by local artists

The emerging and established artists of the Studiopolis collective — painters, ceramists, photographers, jewelry artists and illustrators — are having a blow-out sale in honor of the holidays. It's a fine group of artists covering a variety of styles and media — and nothing will set you back more than $100. 'Nuff said.

The Walker Shop's Local Artist Gift Mart
11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, Walker Art Center (Gift Shop), Minneapolis
    What to look for:
Locally made indie craft, jewelry design, and high-end knick-knacks

As part of this weekend's "Wall to Wall Walker" open house festivities, the art center is hosting a Local Artist Gift Mart in the Target Gallery on Saturday. Staff of the Walker Shop have selected a nicely balanced assortment of jewelry artists, accessory designers, and indie crafters for this day-long showcase and sale of local artisans.
