Restaging vernacular dance for the concert hall isn’t a new endeavor, even when it comes to hip-hop. Philadelphia choreographer Rennie Harris has brilliantly deconstructed hip-hop in works that reveal the urban street dance as a primal scream. Minneapolis choreographer Jason Noer is our local ambassador for breakdance and hip-hop’s translation from the asphalt to the marley, creating zesty works that present those forms in new configurations.

This weekend, the Walker Art Center brings a Brazilian choreographer to the stage who has moved from teaching himself the form to competing in festivals and battles, to assembling his own touring company. The company is fast becoming an international sensation for infusing street dance with contemporary nuances.

Bruno Beltrão and his nine-member Grupo de Rua de Niteroi perform “H3.” The work incorporates elements of krumping and popping in an assemblage of solos, duets and ensemble pieces that build in intensity and virtuosity. For a preview go here.

The floor of the bare stage is wired in order to incorporate the sounds made by the dancers’ shoes into samples into the electronic soundtrack. As Laura Bleiberg wrote in the Los Angeles Times, “Bringing any vernacular dance form onto the stage requires a process of rethinking and representation. ... What Beltrão has come up with ... was a refreshing and challenging prism through which to view this evolving form.”
