Kathak meets gospel in 'Soul to Sole'

The north Indian dance form Kathak is a storytelling style of dance imbued with rhythmic footwork and flowing, descriptive movements. Its themes are often devotional and relate to the mythology and teachings of Hindu scripture.
Gospel music is written and performed to celebrate one’s devotion to Christian life, and is imbued with rhythm and harmony.
This weekend, the two art forms meet in a collaborative performance, “Soul to Sole,” devised by choreographer/dance Rita Mustaphi and composer/singer Robert Robinson.
According to Mustaphi, “Cultural fusion is about co-creating a new reality; it is a way of interacting and expressing through creative exploration. For us, the collaborators, it is a way of bridging distance between remote cultures and transcending time and space culminating in the co-creation of one unique art!”
In addition to Mustaphi and Robinson, the performance includes drummer Timothy Berry, pianist Joseph Samuel Reeves, performers from Katha Dance Company and singers from the Twin Cities Gospel Community Choir.
