Minneapolis has a flourishing “downtown” dance scene with close ties to that in New York City, where deconstructing and refining dance down to the basics of pedestrian and everyday movement (i.e., post-modernist dance) started in the 1960s. What’s practiced here is often called experimental movement, or post-post-post modern dance. And our practitioners are such a draw, New Yorkers are moving here for fresh adventures in movement research.
One of them is Chris Yon, who performed in Minneapolis with New York companies before moving here several years ago. This weekend at the Southern Theater he performs his work “The Infinite Multiverse” with help from local performers Taryn Griggs, Justin Jones and Kristin Van Loon. For an excerpt of a different piece,“Hugo,” performed at Dance Theater Workshop in New York, go here.
Yon shares a double bill with NYC choreographer Johanna Meyer, who is collaborating with San Diego actress Judy Bauerlein in a new duet “Stroll.” The piece is reported set in a science laboratory and the underworld, and as Meyer is an interdisciplinary artist, props and video and distinctive characterizations are part of the mix.
“The Infinite Multiverse” and "Stroll." 7:30 p.m. Thursday; 8 p.m. Friday-Saturday. Southern Theater, Minneapolis. $18. 612-340-1725.
