    Penumbra presents 'Sleep Deprivation Chamber'

By Ed Huyck | Published Wed, Sep 8 2010 7:04 am

St. Paul¹s Penumbra Theatre Company opens its production of the Obie-award-winning "Sleep Deprivation Chamber" Sept. 16.

Playwright  Adrienne Kennedy wrote the autobiographical play with her son, Adam, about an incident that threatened to tear their lives apart. On Jan. 12, 1991, Adam was stopped by police. The routine traffic stop turned dangerous when Adam was beaten by the officer and then charged with resisting arrest and assaulting an officer.

Kennedy explores the racial implications of the beating, and the hard path the family took to clear Adam's name. The cast includes Indira Addington, Lucas Bellamy, Terry Bellamy, Stephen Cartmell, Katherine Kupiecki, Payton Woodson, Deja Stowers, Heidi Bakke, Darrick Mosley and Carl Atiya Swanson.

    Robbie McCauley directs.

The show runs through Oct. 10 at 270 N. Kent St., St. Paul. Tickets are $38 for adults and $10 for students. For information, call 651-224-3180 or visit online.
