    Great group reads = no snoozing

    When opinions of a book range from "I really liked it" to "I really, really liked it," the book club meeting can be a snooze. 

    Just in time for National Reading Group Month — starting tomorrow — comes a list of Great Group Reads. 

    •  "Appassionata" by Eva Hoffman (Other Press)
    •  "The Unit by Ninni Holmqvist" (Other Press)
    •  "The Secret Diaries of Charlotte Brontë" by Syrie James (Avon A)
    •  "The House on Fortune Street by Margot Livesey" (Harper Perennial)
    •  "Perfection: A Memoir of Betrayal and Renewal" by Julie Metz (Voice)
    •  "While I'm Falling" by Laura Moriarty (Hyperion)
    •  "Out Stealing Horses" by Per Petterson (Picador)
    •  "Cost" by Roxana Robinson (Picador)
    •  "Burnt Shadows" by Kamila Shamsie (Picador)

    The selection panel focused on titles from small presses and less well-known titles from large publishers.

    But one title should be familiar to Minnesotans. "Out Stealing Horses," Per Petterson's novel about youth and memory, was first published in hardcover by Graywolf Press in 2007. 

    It spent 70 weeks on the Norwegian bestseller list, and gathered best-book-of-the-year and similar honors from the New York Times Book Review, Time magazine and American Library Association. It's now available in paper from Picador/Macmillan.

    The gurus think these books are likely to "open up lively conversations about a host of timely and provocative topics."
