    No joke -- librarians and wrestlers celebrate Teen Read Week

    Think librarians and wrestlers make an odd couple? Think again.

    This week, the librarians at Young Adult Library Services Association (a division of the American Library Association) and the superstars and divas at World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) join forces to celebrate Teen Read Week 2009 with the WrestleMania Reading Challenge.  

    Tweens and teens who registered by the deadline have to read 10 books, graphic novels or magazines, complete a reading log of what they read, and design a bookmark with a slogan that promotes reading.

    No wrestling required. But winners get a trip to WrestleMania 26 in Phoenix in March.

    The WrestleMania Reading Challenge is just one part of Teen Read Week. 

    This year’s theme, Read Beyond Reality, encourages teens to “read something out of this world, just for the fun of it.”  Many schools, public libraries and bookstores across the country are promoting the importance of reading for teens.

    A highlight of the week is the announcement of the annual Teens’ Top Ten.

    This year, more than 11,000 teens voted online for their favorite books. "Paper Towns" by John Green was their number one, edging out "Breaking Dawn" by Stephanie Meyer.
