Al Sicherman, MinnPost's humorist-in-residence, is the wit behind many MinnRoast songs and sketches. He'll greet his fans at the Book Club Blast.
MinnPost: Tell us about your most recent book release.
Al Sicherman: The chance to re-inflict some of the best (or worst) Star Tribune "Uncle Al" columns on a defenseless public was too good to pass up.
“Geezer Salad” (Syren Book Company) takes us back to umpteen trips to the hardware store, sarcastic dogs, the explanation of the mysterious underwear in the gutter, and more.
MP: Which writers or works have been the strongest influences on your own writing?
AS: I love P.G. Wodehouse for his ability to select the word that is ever so slightly -- but exquisitely -- odd, and to make that look easy.
I believe in the running joke, as perpetrated by Jack Benny, and am an admirer of Groucho Marx and the dreadful pun.
MP: What do you love most about living in Minnesota?
AS: The Minnesota sensibility -- that things are dreadful but that they can always get worse, and that somehow that’s why we like it here -- resonates deeply with me.
I appreciate the chance Minnesota gives me every winter to take pride in not having moved to the desert southwest.
