Joe Kimball wrote the book on the Congdon murders and gives occasional "murder tours" of the mansion where they took place. You can ask him about the gory details at the Book Club Blast.
MinnPost: Tell us about your book.
Joe Kimball: My book “Secrets of the Congdon Mansion” (JayKay Publishing) is a look at the infamous Congdon murders in Duluth.
An 83-year-old heiress was smothered to death in the bedroom of her 39-room mansion on Lake Superior.
The night nurse was bludgeoned to death on the stairway while trying to protect her charge.
Miss Congdon’s adopted daughter was implicated in the murders, but found not guilty, although the son-in-law confessed.
The motive: money.
MP: Which writers have been the strongest influences on your own writing?
JK: My book and my news writing are straight-forward, explanatory journalism, tinged with the occasional wry observation.
I don’t try to emulate others, just tell the story.
MP: What do you love most about living in Minnesota?
JK: I’m big on the concepts of hometown and family; this is where I grew up and where most of my family lives.
It’s great to visit other places, but I love what I know -- even when it’s 30-below or mosquito-feeding season.
