    Catch world-traveler Catherine Watson at the Book Club Blast

    Catherine Watson, former travel editor for the Star Tribune, now writes for MinnPost. She'll be back in Minnesota for the Book Club Blast. 

    MinnPost: Tell us about your books.

    CW: My most recent book is “Home on the Road: Further Dispatches from the Ends of the Earth” (Syren).

    It’s a collection of my travel essays, mostly from the Star Tribune. 

    The piece about Easter Island, called “Two Roads Diverged,” appeared on WorldHum.com and in “Best American Travel Writing 2008” (Houghton Mifflin).

    It was a Minnesota Book Award finalist, as was my first book, “Roads Less Traveled.”

    MP: Which writers or works have been the strongest influences on your own writing?  

    CW: Mark Twain, for the variety of his interests, his travels and his voice. 

    Richard Halliburton, for the sheer fun of it.

    They both talk to their readers as if to friends, something I tried to do, too.

    MP: What do you love most about living in Minnesota?

    CW: The Mississippi River. All of it, but especially the breathtaking bluff country around Winona.

    If it were in Europe, that scenery would be more famous than the Rhein, the Seine and the Danube, put together.
