Over the past few weeks, dozens of BCC book clubs have sent in reading recommendations in the genres of fiction, nonfiction, poetry and drama.
As expected, book clubbers recommended mostly fiction and nonfiction works -- and only a handful of poetry collections and plays. To fill out the lists of favorites -- and hopefully inspire book groups to broaden the scope of their reading, I’ve supplemented member suggestions with my own.
My suggestions are marked with asterisks.
Recommended poetry collections:
"The Trouble with Poetry: And Other Poems," Billy Collins, 2005*
"Fire to Fire: New and Selected Poems," Mark Doty, 2008*
"On the Bus with Rosa Parks," Rita Dove, 1999*
"Bicycles: Love Poems," Nikki Giovanni, 2009*
"Song of the Threshing Floor," Anaele Charles Ihuoma, 2006
"Otherwise: New and Selected Poems," Jane Kenyon, 1996
"The Shadow of Sirus," W.S. Merwin, 2008*
"Evidence," Mary Oliver, 2009
"The Resurrection Trade," Leslie Adrienne Miller, 2007*
"The Best of It: New and Selected Poems," Kay Ryan, 2010*
"Delights and Shadows," Ted Kooser, 2004*
Recommended plays:
"Rabbit Hole," David Linsay-Abaire, 2006*
"Proof," David Auburn, 2000*
"Copenhagen," Michael Frayn, 1998*
"Dancing at Lughnasa," Brian Friel, 1990*
"Crimes of the Heart," Beth Henley, 1978*
"Angels in America," Tony Kushner, 1995*
"Glengarry Glen Ross," David Mamet, 1994*
"The Clean House," Sarah Ruhl, 2004*
"Doubt: A Parable," John Patrick Shanley, 2004*
"Arcadia," Tom Stoppard, 1993
"The Piano Lesson," August Wilson, 1990*
"I Am My Own Wife," Doug Wright, 2004*
All plays listed above have been made into films or television miniseries except for "Dancing at Lughnasa," "The Clean House," "Arcadia" and "I Am My Own Wife." Read the book, see the movie!
