That's the concept behind Flashlight Worthy Book Recommendations, an eclectic site featuring hundreds of book lists in every imaginable genre, from Americana to Parenting to Sea Stories.
The brainchild of Peter Steinberg and Eric Mueller, Flashlight Worthy posts quirky, hand-picked lists like "What New Yorkers Read on the Subway," "Creepy Houses That Must Be Explored" and "The 10 Most Influential Fiction Characters."
Whether you're searching for a great read or simply bored, the surprising, entertaining recommendations — "Great Books About Magicians or Circuses," "The Best Books on Raising Urban Chickens" — are always fun to wander through.
Contributors to Flashlight Worthy include a range of professionals in the literary community — authors, journalists, book reviewers, professors — as well as experts in other fields and everyday readers.
My favorite thing about the site's setup is the contributor bio next to each list, divulging the name and background of the compiler.
That way, when you come across lists like "12 Classic Steampunk Books" and "The Best 21st-Century Canadian Fiction," you can see they were submitted by an award-winning science-fiction critic and a Canadian bookbinder, respectively.
A list of "The Best Books for Understanding Alzheimer's" is more trustworthy when it's generated by an elder-care services consultant with 10 years of experience directing closed Alzheimer's units, rather than SuzyBee159.
Every so often, the BCC page will post links to intriguing lists on Flashlight Worthy Book Recommendations.
