From Newsweek, which gets special access during the presidential campaign in return for not publishing behind-the-scenes stuff until after Election Day:

NEWSWEEK has also learned that [Gov. Sarah] Palin's shopping spree at high-end department stores was more extensive than previously reported. While publicly supporting Palin, McCain's top advisers privately fumed at what they regarded as her outrageous profligacy. One senior aide said that Nicolle Wallace had told Palin to buy three suits for the convention and hire a stylist. But instead, the vice presidential nominee began buying for herself and her family — clothes and accessories from top stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus. According to two knowledgeable sources, a vast majority of the clothes were bought by a wealthy donor, who was shocked when he got the bill.

It's already been reported that Norm Coleman's D.C. landlord and pal Jeff Larson was  Palin's "personal shopper." But he was reimbursed a month before the news broke, so he might not be the "donor" in this situation. It's also odd Newsweek wouldn't print Larson's name if it was already out there.

If it's someone else, could it possibly be another Coleman pal, Nasser Kazeminy? After all, he's the guy Harper's magazine says paid for Coleman family clothes at Neiman Marcus. (Coleman denies the allegation and no evidence beyond author Ken Silverstein's two unnamed sources has emerged.)

Kazeminy, of course, is currently being sued for allegedly trying to funnel money to Laurie Coleman's employer.

Remember, the Palin shopping spree happened around Sept. 1, weeks before the Oct. 6 Harper's story or the more recent lawsuit stories came to light.

[Update: Just to be clear, this is speculation based on an interesting confluence of circumstances. There are a million other potential GOP donors, and it's more likely one of them, if it isn't Larson.]

By the way, Newsweek says Palin's shopping spree cost more than previously reported, and "an angry aide" characterized it as "Wasilla hillbillies looting Neiman Marcus from coast to coast," adding, "the truth will eventually come out when the Republican Party audits its books."
