It's deadline day for the Star Tribune buyout; staffers must submit their requests by 5 p.m.
Although several rumors are racing around the mill, I've only confirmed one name so far: longtime business reporter Mike Meyers. A former national economics reporter for the Strib back when the paper had national correspondents, the 59-year-old Meyers says leaving now makes sense because the Strib won't cover retiree health insurance for anyone who leaves after March.
If management accepts his request — and they have the right to refuse anyone — Meyers will be out the door with 40 weeks pay on Friday. He says he plans to keep writing, but not until he spends two weeks in Cancun.
Meyers' request would fill one of "up to two" buyout slots management designated for reporters and editorial writers three weeks ago; they are seeking up to 25 buyouts total as part of a $30 million budget reduction. If too few folks sign up — a very real possibility, sources say — "there are likely to be some layoffs in January," noted Editor Nancy Barnes in a staff memo.
Management's buyout list also specified "up to three" Metro-section columnists: Katherine Kersten has indicated she's leaving; James Lileks is staying (and adding a "spiffy new Strib blog"); all signs point to C.J. remaining in place; and Nick Coleman's status remains up in the air.
Their union contract gives Coleman and Kersten the right to stay in other newsroom positions; both were offered opinion-section freelance writing spots if they take the buyout.
Also on the list: "up to three" photographers and videographers. Non-union management and staff are also being cut; the only confirmed manager's name I have is photography director Peter Koeleman.
A few of those in the mix declined comment; out of professional respect, I'm going to wait and see how their situations play out. One rumoree who says she's staying: editorial writer/columnist Lori Sturdevant.
More details as they emerge.
