After coming up short on buyouts earlier this month, the Star Tribune gave layoff notices Thursday afternoon to seven newsroom employees.
No reporters were on the list; the disappeared include a photographer, copy editors, news and photo lab assistants and a clerk/receptionist, says Newspaper Guild co-chair David Chanen.
However, six of the workers may not end up leaving — or being laid off. Chanen says management simultaneously reopened the buyout program for everyone but the unnamed photographer. In the unlikely event a more senior person in the same job category decides to take the buyout after refusing it a few weeks ago, the laid-off person would stay.
If not, all but the photographer can take the buyout, and get three months of paid medical in addition to the contract-mandated week's severance for every six months of continuous service.
Despite bankruptcy-related problems paying off 2008 buyouts, Chanen says he was assured these workers will get their money.
Here's the memo on the buyout reopening:
The company is opening a limited voluntary buyout program for six Guild-represented positions in the newsroom. The program opens today, and any eligible employee who wishes to take part in the program must turn in the attached election form no later than 5 p.m. Thursday, February 12, to the Human Resources Department.
The buyouts are being offered in these job categories; the list shows the maximum number of volunteers that the Star Tribune expects to select for each category:
Job Category (Number)
‘A’ scale Copy Editor two (2)
‘F’ scale Clerk/Receptionist one (1)
‘N’ scale News Assistants two (2)
‘D’ scale Photo Lab Assistants one (1)
