Some happy Strib news

[Note: Updated at 5:25 p.m.]

I probably don't write enough about the Star Tribune's investigative reporters, who are among the best we've got. So on a bad-news day, I want to give a shoutout to Pam Louwagie, who was added to the investigative team today. Management has a stated commitment to digging — amid cutbacks, legitimately questioned — but this seems a step in the right direction.

There were other management changes under the hood at 425 Portland today. I haven't confirmed all the implications, but here's what I think I know:

Eric Wieffering, assistant managing editor for business, got a promotion. Sounds like he'll oversee metro coverage as well. (Kate Parry will continue to oversee investigations; I errantly gave that to Eric earlier.)

Dennis McGrath, who helmed the paper's election-year "Politically Connected" section, becomes deputy digital editor. McGrath had been Doug Tice's boss, so Tice might now be in charge of government coverage. Not sure if McGrath's move replenishes the web side in the wake of online managing editor Will Tacy's departure last week, or if Tacy will ultimately be replaced.

The Strib did name a new managing editor today; Duchesne Drew will handle printing, recruiting and outreach. Longtime newsroom manager Paul Klauda takes over day-to-day metro coverage.

Rene Sanchez, formerly one of a troika of managing editors, becomes senior managing editor to elevate him above the mob of MEs.
