    Dr. Laura leaves town

By David Brauer | Published Thu, Mar 26 2009 3:35 pm

Back in the Clinton Era, when I was riding low as an AM1500 talk show host, Dr. Laura Schlessinger was arguably at her finger-wagging peak. Despite her own sketchy past and misleading credentials, the homo-hating Ph.D. served up moral condemnation cold, and Rush Limbaugh's syndicators wedged her into stations such as KSTP.

Even though she's still heard nationwide, Schlessinger's orbit has decayed considerably; she's currently the 2-5 p.m. host on AM1570 KCYR. Who? You mean you haven't heard of the "New Talk of the West Metro"? Owned by Christian conservative broadcaster Salem Communications, AM1570 is the radio equivalent of Kathy Griffin's D-List, behind KTLK, AM1500 and The Patriot (AM1280) among local right-side stations.

But listen while you can, because come Monday, she's gone.

This week, the Business Journal's Sam Black reported that on March 30, KCYR will changing to "all-business radio." That tantalizing format will feature Bloomberg Business News and — in place of Schlessinger's moral demagoguery — TV demagogue Lou Dobbs.

The station did have an opportunity to move some of AM1570's conservatives to The Patriot, but only Dennis Miller will make the switch, from 9-11 a.m. to a very tape-delayed 11 p.m.-2 a.m.
