    A bad day to stop home delivery?

    You think Detroit newspaper junkies are rueing the first day that the city's two papers stop home-delivering? Monday turned out to be just a wee bit newsy: the feds decide to restructure General Motors and Chrysler, and the Michigan State Spartans make the men's Final Four at Ford Field.

    The silver lining for the Detroit Free Press and Detroit News, which no longer deliver on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday, is they still print papers for newsstand sales. Especially with major sports news, both could sell plenty of the fewer-paged editions at much higher margins that subscribers provide. (That's welcome locally, since the News and the Pioneer Press have the same owners.)

    Only bottom-line problem: both papers are free today, so no circulation dough in the coffers. One can only hope ad staffs long trained to sell paid circ talked up the virtues of a one-day freebie.
