WCCO-AM purges sales execs, hires ex-KFAN program director

A flurry of behind-the-scenes changes at the local CBS radio empire today. Group Vice-President of Sales Mary Niemeyer and Jack FM General Sales Manager Patrick Stelzner were let go along with two sales reps, according to company memos.

Niemeyer was current General Manager Mick Anselmo's predecessor, but was demoted when he took over in November, so this seems like the other shoe dropping.

Meanwhile, an interesting hire on the content side: Anselmo's ex-Clear Channel colleague Doug Westerman, who will be as "a freelance producer" for WCCO Radio. Westerman was program director during KFAN's ascent, and at KTLK during the right-wing talker's early days.

I'd expect current 'CCO program director Wendy Paulson to have head cocked for the guillotine blade's woosh, but she gushed in her memo that Westerman "brings years of experience and a vast knowledge to our station. ... Doug has been a long time friend and I am thrilled to have him on our team!"

There's still no word on a permanent noon-3 p.m. host, by the way.

Sorry, I was listening to my IPOD.

WCCO/radio is still around? Really?

I'd wondered if my old colleague Doug was still in the market...

I thought I heard his name in the credits of some sports broadcasts -- the Gophers basketball, I think. I don't now if it was as a producer or a statkeeper or something like that.

I wasn't even aware he'd left KFAN.
