A good overview of newspaper bankruptcies

By David Brauer | Published Wed, May 20 2009 11:55 am

Editor and Publisher has deeply reported story on newspaper bankruptcies (which just, ironically, went online). The Strib is only mentioned in passing, but this is an excellent primer on how Chapter 11 is affecting the industry.

    Two location-specific notes:

First, the E&P piece notes that "most of the newspapers published by bankrupt companies are actually turning operating profits." That was true of the Strib in 2008, when it made $31 million, but hasn't been true through the first three months of this tough, tough year.

Excluding bankruptcy costs, the paper has lost $2.6 million since the Jan. 15 filing, though recent labor cuts haven't fully shown up yet. It remains unclear from the redacted filings whether cost-cutting is outpacing revenue drops, but it will have to for the Strib to have a post-bankruptcy future.

Second, because publisher Chris Harte squirreled away more than $25 million in cash before filing, the Strib hasn't needed the debtor-in-possession financing referenced in the piece. And that cash pile has somehow grown to $36 million as of March 31, according to court documents.
