Forum Communications axes Capitol reporter Scott Wente

Scott Wente, a Minnesota Capitol reporter for Fargo-based Forum Communications, was laid off this week in a cost-cutting move, just days after the 2009 session ended. Forum editor Matt Von Pinnon confirmed the departure.

The layoff leaves Forum — which has 21 Minnesota papers and more state dailies any other publisher — with just one Capitol correspondent, Don Davis. Earlier this month, Forum eliminated its only North Dakota Capitol reporting position, citing cost pressures and that legislature's every-other-year schedule.

Wente arguably influenced this legislative session more than any other journalist, though not intentionally.

He was the reporter whom 2006 DFL gubernatorial candidate Mike Hatch called a "Republican whore" in that campaign's final days. After Lt. Gov. candidate Judi Dutcher flubbed a question about ethanol, Wente asked Hatch if his running mate understood the subject and why she wasn't available for an interview. Hatch's crude conflation of Forum's conservative leadership and Wente's legitimate questions rekindled doubts about the candidate's temperment, and he became the only statewide DFLer to lose that year.

Had Hatch not freaked out, we might be talking something other than unallotment and "no new taxes" right now.

Wente and Davis were a great tag-team for covering issues affecting non-metro Minnesotans. Readers all over the state will be poorer for his departure.

This is sad, but not unexpected news. Scott (and Don) are top notch reporters and two of my favs in the Capitol Corps.

As I mentioned in my Tweet, I also played a cameo role in Hatch/Pawlenty race.
I did a brief interview with Tom Hauser on my reaction to the infamaous Judi Dutcher "E85 Tape."

Soon afterwards, things started to go badly for Mr. Hatch in the homestreach.

This sucks. Scott Wente is a fantastic guy and a journalist I have respected for a very long time. Sad news.

I enjoyed Scott's work very much and will miss seeing him everyday. There aren't nearly enough Journalists covering the Capitol and in a time when we desperately need good Reporters....we are losing them.

There is a price to be paid for all this as the watchdog for the public is dimished. The people of Minnesota need more eyes at the Capitol, not fewer.

I also feel bad for for Don as his work will no doubt increase.

Good luck in whatever is next for you Scott.

You can check out that porous pavement at the Minnesota AFL-CIO Labor Pavilion during the 2009 State Fair, too. The Labor Pavilion, the first green building on our state fairgrounds, features the first porous pavement at the Fair, as well. And the pavement survived the 2008=2009 winter undamaged.
