Micro-sponsorship campaign finishes strong, and nets $13,190

By Joel Kramer | Published Wed, Jun 10 2009 10:35 am

All good things must come to an end, and the BrauBlog micro-sponsorship campaign is now over. We are very pleased that 45 additional micro-sponsorships were added in the past two days, bringing our total to 221 Highbraus (at $25 each) and 107 LowBraus ($10 each). That makes a total of $6,595 from micro-sponsors, triggering a matching grant of $6,595 from the Harnisch Foundation in New York.  So the micro-sponsorship campaign has generated $13,190 for MinnPost.

This was one experiment among many in how a not-for-profit like MinnPost can raise revenues for high-quality journalism. It worked well: we have brought in many new donors, who join the more than 1,400 MinnPost annual members. (While the matching program is over, you can still become a BrauBlog micro-sponsor here.)

Keep in mind that Braublog micro-sponsors are anonymous. David Brauer requested that he not know who the donors are, and we believe this anonymity has attracted some people who otherwise might not have donated to MinnPost. If you want to be recognized as a MinnPost donor, please become a member HERE. Membership growth is critical to MinnPost's success.

Some people have suggested that we should not have capped the micro-sponsorship donations at $25.  One of the goals here was to test out a "low price point," since we encourage our regular members to donate at least $50 a year. It is interesting that more than two-thirds of the micro-sponsors chose the Highbrau level of $25 rather than the Lowbrau level of $10, so maybe some of you would have given more.

Our sincere thanks to all of you who donated, and to Ruth Ann Harnisch for her generous match. And of course, thanks to David Brauer for his outstanding work on this blog.
