Oh my God! I insulted Brett Favre's manhood!

By David Brauer | Published Fri, Jul 17 2009 1:25 pm

Well, this has to be the highlight of my week!

Yesterday, in defending the Strib's creation of an online Brett Favre Page, I referred to our esteemed future quarterback and reliable retirement dramatist as "diva-like."

That brought a quick and completely unexpected retort from The Bleacher Report, a sports site whose headline blared, "Columnist calls Favre Diva-like."

Well, that's true; I did. But apparently I did so much more. According to writer Glenn Franco Simmons:

Perhaps one of the worst insults an NFL player could receive would be for a "local media and political" commentator to venture into sports and use an effeminate phrase to describe a tough guy.

Yet that is exactly what David Brauer of MinnPost.com did while writing about the StarTribune.com's new Favre Web page on its Web site.

Simmons' column is labeled "humor," and believe me, I'm laughing as I write this.

I may not be a Wise Latina Woman, but I had no idea using "diva" to describe a prima donna (oops, did I do it again?) was so sexually charged.

Heck, it's not like I'm the first to take that particular shot. Strib Vikings writer Judd Zulgad has called Favre a diva, as has Yahoo Sports columnist Dan Wetzel, as has the Sporting News' Mike Florio. On some level, I should apologize for the cliché.

But as Simmons notes, I'm not fit to hurl this grievous insult at the Great Man:

... In fairness, Brauer may be a big sports fan, or perhaps he isn't.

It doesn't matter because he is a media commentator, but how often do you have a non-sports writer calling a future Hall-of-Famer diva-like?

It's priceless, but so telling in Favre's case.

Oh Glenn, must I whip out my Baseball Writers of America card (19 years old, but still), or recall my many years of service to Bob Lurtsema's Vikings Update (where my editor was none other than the New York Times' David Carr)?

Are you going to force me to remember my Twin Cities Reader sports column, or my sports business coverage for what is now the Twin Cities Business Journal? I was a KFAN host for crying out loud!

I may be in retirement, but I was practically the king of minor sportswriters in this town! The king, I tell you!

I must admit I don't really understand what Simmons is saying in the rest of his piece ... but will only linger, like the fat lady singing, to defend my publication, whose sports headlines he also mocks.

Yes, it's true our current headlines lean heavily toward bicycling right now, though Simmons ignores posts from Aaron Gleeman (MSNBC!), Pat Borzi (New York Times!) and Steve Aschburner (Sports Illustrated!).

I may not be fit to carry their macho, macho jocks, but I'll protect my guys like a mother hen protects her chicks!
