Witness: I saw -- and smelled -- Target Field's red bell pepper bong

I know I should be working on higher-minded pursuits, but after MPR’s Bob Collins detected a whiff of hoax in Monday’s “red pepper bong” story, I am pleased to provide a named source who says the Target Field spliff-out did happen.

It’s all been mystery and pseudonym up until now, but John Butcher of south Minneapolis has stepped forward to provide eyewitness — and nosewitness — testimony.

Long-time Twins fans may raise an eyebrow, since John bears the same name as a former Twins pitcher. However, he was willing to provide his address, the names of some mutual friends in the restaurant business, and his place of employment. This may also be an eyebrow-raiser, but John says he worked part-time at McMahon’s Pub, which burned down about 12 hours before game time.

“It was very difficult to watch the game; it felt like I wasn’t really at the game,” Butcher acknowledges.

Still, his friend Lucille had her boss’s tickets, and the company and the diversion carried the day.

John says the incident went down in Section 1, which, from the photos, seems right. John and his three pals were in row 9, and the veggie bonger, he guesses, was in row 11. “We didn’t notice him at first, but about the 7th inning, when he showed up, he was obviously the guy,” Butcher says. “I can verify he said he was going to be the first one to smoke pot at Target Field.”

John says he “definitely” smelled pot. He confirms the testimony of the fellow fan who filed CNN “iReport,” Butcher says, “Security didn’t do anything.”

The fan, likely CNN’s citizen correspondent, showed the usher the digital photos that later graced a lot of local and national websites.

Was John as outraged as the citizen correspondent? “I think the guy shoulda been thrown out,” he says. “You’re at the game, your kids are there - grow up! It’s not like going to a high school football game.”

Any idea why a red bell pepper? “I have no idea, though I was close enough to see that. My friends and I were joking he obviously didn’t like the vegetarian selection. Eventually, the guy wandered off.”

Perhaps he bought his red pepper at the Farmers Market kiosk just inside Gate 34.

Wikileaks. The major media story of the year and you are writing about pot? For shame.

"Eventually, the guy wandered off.”

no doubt to go and cross something else off his 'stoner's bucket list'...

When this stuff is finally legalized, stories like this will no longer need space. Legalize Red Peppers NOW!

This guy was just like Obama's pitch at the Washington National's game: high and outside!*

* Okay, I stole that from Letterman's mono last night, but it's a great line!

So who's going to be the second person to smoke pot at Target Field?

On the positive side, if more people smoke red peppers at the new stadium, concession sales through the roof (if there was one to go through).

Is this what Campbell's uses to make Pepper Pot Soup?

Cheech crossed one off his "stoner bucket list" last month - he defeated Anderson Cooper in a celebrity Jeporady showdown.

Aaron, if you count exhaling through a locked iron fence, that would be me.

Nice skyway walk between the Target Center and Target Field, btw.

Too bad that downtown Twins games makes downtown inaccessible to anyone not able to travel six or more blocks on foot.

Sorry, but the Dome crowd was easily avoided. The crowd for this ball park is going to be a major pain in the butt EVERY single home game. This is what happens when these decisions are made by elites in the middle of the night with the cooperation of still other elites who then stuck the non-elites living in Hennepin County with the bill.

And let's not forget Gov. Dress Up Like A Ball Player who signed that bill. For a guy who won't raise your taxes, he sure stuck it to the most urban county in the state.

Perhaps he chose a red pepper because he'd seen this video by "Master Bong" - pepper to bubbler in 2 minutes!

He was obviously motivated by the natural grass ... It must have been a great game, I heard he kept talking about the one-hitter ...
