Update: Here's Gaddhafi's letter to St. Paul schoolkids

Thursday, I wrote about the St. Paul second-grade class that sent a letter to Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddhafi in 1986 ... and received his signed reply. Their teacher, Jill Swanson, held on to the missive, and sent me a copy after my post ran.

She says she misremembered a detail — she didn't have to get the letter translated; it was in English, though it contains Gaddhafi's chicken-scratch signature. The letter, which Swanson and her class judged "propaganda," contains various slogans in the margins, including ironic ones like "the need for freedom is latent" and "masters in their own castles."

A refresher: Swanson's class asked Gaddhafi and U.S. President Ronald Reagan tough questions after Libyan agents bombed a German disco U.S. soldiers frequented and Reagan ordered bombers to attack Libya, including Gaddhafi's home. The strongman's 15-month-old daughter was killed.
