Honeywell Building Solutions, based in Golden Valley, has been awarded a potentially massive government contract to help make federally owned buildings more environmentally sustainable.

The open-ended contract authorizes Honeywell to take on up to $5 billion in energy-efficiency, renewable-energy and water-conservation projects over the next 10 years.

It’s called an Energy Savings Performance Contract. Honeywell pays for the projects up front, and the federal government pays later, using money from the efficiency savings.

Projects will include installing solar panels and energy-efficient lighting, upgrading HVAC equipment and tightening buildings with new doors and windows.
