Best Buy uses tracking software to analyze customer patterns

Best Buy is among a handful of retailers using high-tech tracking software to analyze and respond to customer purchasing patterns.
BusinessWeek magazine writes that Best Buy used tracking software by Omniture to solve a question about in-store financing.
The company noticed financing for such big-ticket items as TVs and computers was surging, even as the number of customers spending $1,000 or more per trip was falling. It decided to expand free financing to also cover shopping carts full of less expensive items.
The Omniture software helped Best Buy decide at what threshold to offer financing. It settled on $499. Since it started offering the financing in November, the change has generated tens of millions in profits, the company reported.
