3M tones down its annual shareholders event

Lower attendance leads the 3M annual shareholders meeting coverage in both the Star Tribune and Pioneer Press.

The Pioneer Press notes that in the past the event has been likened to the State Fair and drawn close to 3,500 attendees.

With the company working its way through tough times, however, officials chose to trim the event's budget by about $500,000. That means no free lunch, slimmer goodie bags, and, as a result, much smaller attendance -- only around 1,000 shareholders.

CEO George Buckley said it wouldn't be right to party when around 4,700 employees have lost their jobs in recent months.
